How to Turn an Old Furniture into a Beautiful Decoration Piece: Patina
The patina comes from France - 19th century - when the nobleness’ wore out furniture was 'imitated' by joiners and people who could not buy expensive pieces of furniture.
Today, architects and decorators throughout the world agree on the beauty of an 'aged' furniture. So, it doesn’t matter your stile, choose an old furniture piece and work on it. People will envy your good taste.
Patina
Material 2 sponges 1 large brush Wall sandpaper - numbers 80 and 120 White* PVA (polyvinyl acetate, meaning paint based on water) paint Bitumen Opaque varnish
Execution Make sure that your furniture is without problems (like the presence of termite). If so, drop it.
With sandpaper 80, take away the old varnish or paint. You will be done when the wood is smooth. If residues of the old varnish or paint remain, do not despair, the new paint will cover the entire furniture. Obs. Sand the wood always in the veins’ direction. Do that also when painting. Remember: always in the veins’ direction.
Cover the entire piece of furniture with a first hand of ink. Wait for it to dry for about 6 hours. Pass the second hand of paint. Wait for it to dry.
Scratch the paint out in the veins’ direction with sandpaper 80 to wear the ink, so the background of wood appears in some places. But just a few places, giving the effect of ageing.
Plunge the tip of a sponge in the bitumen and rub the furniture details - the high relieves, corners and trims - always in the same direction. Do not wait for it to dry - as you pass the bitumen, remove the excess with a clean sponge. When dried up, make the finish gently sanding the surface with sandpaper 120 (fine).
Now pass two hands of varnish. But wait for the first hand to dry before passing the second hand so the patina lasts longer.
Finished! Your piece of furniture is transformed and beautiful.
(*) If you want to venture, choose your favorite color and have an unique piece in your home – red, for instance, is pure refinement, classy; it remits to the east that is always in fashion.
Good luck!
