How to Ask for a Salary Increase

Do you think you deserve a salary increase but do not know how to ask? Here is the way to present your request to your boss.

Know your company policies: is there an annual review of salary according to its income? The salary increases in accordance to a career plan? Who has to make the decision to do so (or propose its increase)? Read the company’s book of policies normally found in the Human Resources (HR) Section.

Note: Some people suggest others to ask someone from the Human Resources (HR) Section for advice about it but, as I particularly had bad experiences doing that, I will advise you not to do so. I’ll explain: in my point of view, the HR section, as part of the company, is only concerned with the company’s interests in the end. The employees’ interests will only be taken care of if they meet the company’s interests. As the employees are working there to serve the interests of the company, so is the HR section. Therefore, only ask someone from the HR section if you are certain that that’s the company policy for that matter.

Know the value of your work: discover how much other people who do the same as you earn in your region. If possible, obtain numbers that take into account:

· your work description.

· your responsibility, including administrative tasks.

· your years of experience.

· the amount of time that you’ve worked for the company.

· your studies.

· your position.

Prepare a list of your achievements: it is important that your leaders know what you have done well for the company. Make a list and present it to them, but always ask someone to review it first.

Expose your case:

Give attention to the problems that you had to solve and how you solved them.

Show them why your presence means money for the company.

· What were the business operations’ improvements since you are there?

· Have you completed or helped complete a large and complicated project?

· Have you worked extra hours to achieve urgent goals?

· Have you had and has initiative?

· Have you worked more than you were supposed to?

· Have you saved company time or money?

· Have you improved any system or process?

· Have you helped other co-workers?

Schedule your request: if you just go there and ask for an increase, you will sound unprepared and, most likely, as someone who does not deserve it. When you get to work, just say "I would like to talk to you close to the time of departure".

Tips

You can negotiate more than an increase in salary. If the situation is appropriate, talk about the benefits, actions or changes that you think you can do in your work.

Do not be negative: do not use the conversation to complain about the administration, co-workers, working conditions or something else. If you have to talk about a case, present it politely, with a study of the problem and possible solutions.

How to Prepare a Speech

It is possible that we have been chosen for a special event and we need to speak in public. The marriage of a child, a relative graduation and so on. The fear of speaking in public is something that we all have, to a greater or lesser extent. Much of this fear is caused by one not having prepared anything previously. This means that, added to the fact that we are talking to many people, we are talking about something that we do not know or do not know how to explain.

To solve this problem, we need to prepare a good speech before speaking in public. Following these steps, you will never need to be afraid to speak in public again:

1) Search on the subject that you will talk about: Look at a library or even on the internet. This way you will have more confidence during the speech.

2)Think about the message: make a scheme with the main points. Be sure to choose points that are in accordance to what you wrote before, unless you want to contradict yourself willfully.

3) If you are writing a speech on, let’s say, politics, do not say what everyone expects to hear. Find a middle ground between what you want to say and what the public wants to hear.

4) Make it interesting including tricks, curiosities or fun stories.

5) Write a simple and concise speech.

6) Practice your speech from start to finish.

Tips

- Be sure that your speech makes sense and that the items are relate to each other.

- If you need notes, use them.

- You must practice and you can ask for a family member to listen to his speech.

- Count the total time of the speech while practicing. If it’s too long for the occasion, people will get tired and will not focus on you anymore.

- When practicing, speak clearly and loudly so anyone on the audience can listen you.

- Dress yourself properly not too excessively but not simple. The looks can make a difference.
